FAQ

Music Licensing Questions?

Manion Music has the answers.

  1. No Royalties? How can you do this?

That’s exactly the question Mike Savvides, Lifetime board member of the National Restaurant Association, asked when he found us at our first NRA show in Chicago.

At Manion Music, we own all the rights to all our recordings, our arrangements, and our performances – everything. And that’s why no one else can demand you pay them for playing it. You have our exclusive Lifetime Performance License®. All other music labels, composers, performers, services, and studios license their music through the traditional collection agencies – ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC – to collect their royalties for them. We don’t, and that’s why Manion Music is Yours For Life! ®

Mike Saviddes realized what a breakthrough Manion Music represents, and he left our booth a very happy customer.

  1. Can I use my own equipment, or do I have to buy yours?

All Manion Music collections come to you on Compact Discs, each containing about an hour of music. You can play them in a CD carousel player, or easily convert them to MP3 files to play on your own sound system through your computer, iPad, Galaxy Tab, or cell phone. You don’t need the hassle of equipment on the roof, or messy cabling, or “lost satellite signal” or DSL downtime. Manion Music is all yours!.

  1. Is there a limit on speakers? And what about our patio?

With Manion Music, you can use as many speakers as you like. You can also play it on your patio or sidewalk café for no extra charge. Our license allows a generous 10,000 square feet indoor playing area (outside is free), and, unlike our competitors, we don’t include the kitchen and the storerooms. Inexpensive upgrades for larger spaces are easily available – and your Lifetime Performance License® also gives you the right to use it for music-on-hold at no extra charge, saving you even more money!

  1. What kind of music should I play?

Research at John Hopkins University reveals that classical music provides the “most satisfying” dining experience, and customers are “most likely to come back” to the restaurants with classical music. Many of our customers play our jazz collections in their bar areas, and switch to classical in the dining areas.

  1. When I play my own CDs in my restaurant, they’re either too loud or you can’t hear them at all.

This frequent complaint brings us new customers every day. Most popular music has a lot of highs and lows. That’s why your customers often ask you to “please turn the music down.” Manion Music solves that problem.

  1. How do you do it? I’m always reaching for the volume control.

Good question. All Manion Music collections are designed and selected with background music in mind. Each piece is newly recorded by world-class producers and engineers with state-of-the-art equipment. Then each piece is engineered specifically to be played as background music in a room full of people engaged in lively conversation. The louder passages are eased back; the quiet passages are gently raised, so that a seamless, consistent sound level can be maintained. The result? A smooth, even volume, with annoying crescendos and dropouts gone, blended expertly into a quality listening experience Our music is a welcome companion, never intruding or distracting the listener, but always pleasantly in the background.

Since every Manion Music disc has exactly the same volume range, you can play all our collection without ever having to touch your volume control unless you want to. As one happy customer puts it, “You just set it, and forget it.”

  1. Well, what if my bartender likes to play his favorite playlist?

The sound level will be raucous – all over the place. In addition, you will probably have to pay annual royalties to several music licensing societies to make sure you’re covered for all the music he’s playing. Even after you’ve spent all that money, you’re not guaranteeing your customers a pleasant musical atmosphere– no matter how much it costs.

  1. OK, I’m interested, but not sure what to choose. When should I play classical music?

Our Classical collections reflect a relaxed, sophisticated, classy ambience. It fits right in with your desire to offer your customers the best of everything – including music. In family restaurants, upbeat music often overstimulates children, while classical music is soothing and calming. And it’s our most popular genre for dining areas.

  1. Doesn’t classical music all sound the same?

No way. Part of what has made classical music the most popular music in history is its variety. Manion Music’s classical collections offer more than 25 hours of music in a wide range of styles. Manion Music’s Ted Libbey, famous for his reviews on NPR and the New York Times, carefully searched the classical repertory for the pieces most suitable for background use. As a result, our collections feature music that the whole world loves. And they can be used to suggest several different moods. Customers can expand the breadth of the sophisticated ambience, without diluting the atmosphere, by adding our Jazz, Italian, Caribbean, and Cafe Moods collections to their repertoire.

  1. We don’t play music at all – the fees are too high.

Not any more. That’s why we started Manion Music – so you never have to pay monthly royalties that keep going up every year. And once you play our music, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

Music is the most expressive medium known to man, and since ancient times people have valued its ability to stir the emotions. Our music aims to ease away cares so the customer will enjoy the surroundings, stay longer, and spend more. The pieces harmonize with one another with an ease and flow that fit together like elements in a fine painting. And Manion Music makes more affordable than ever.

  1. Is Manion Music only for restaurants?

Manion Music was founded to serve the restaurant community, and our customers range from fast-food franchises to DiRoNA fine dining restaurants. Well, it wasn’t long before our features brought customers from the retail and commercial communities. Our customers include banks, office buildings, warehouses, wineries, hotels – even the Hong Kong Airport!

  1. How will I know what music to play when?

We’ve arranged our collections in fifteen collections of five hours each. The Classical music begins with intimate, romantic composers like Chopin and Debussy that provide a quiet, peaceful ambience, and move through “middle of the road” sonatas and concertos to the bright, exciting pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, and others. Our Jazz collections have a mix of lively and more easy-listening selections. In fact, you can change the “temperature” of the room by adjusting the mood of the music. You control it all. You can fine-tune your music to suit the hour of the day, speed up or slow down the pace of the action, and create a different environment for each special occasion.

  1. It sounds great, but one of my restaurants has a jazzy atmosphere and I need that kind of music.

Manion Music offers Jazz, Italian, Latino, Caribbean, Cafe Moods, Pop Grooves, and – for those critical six weeks after Thanksgiving – Christmas. Each collection is available on the same basis: you pay once, and it’s Yours for Life!®

  1. What options do I have for playing Manion Music?

When you order Manion Music, you’ll receive your music on top-quality Compact Discs. You can play them on a carousel connected with your sound system, or transfer them in MP3 format to a digital music player, such as a cell phone. We’ve found that customers will need those CD’s sooner or later, so be sure to keep them in a safe place, with your license, so you always have the original high-quality recordings. As an archive.

Our quality Compact Discs have a long life expectancy, but rest assured, we will replace any that you manage to break at a very reasonable cost.

  1. If I use Manion Music, can I still play popular music?

Only if you pay the public performance royalties to the owners or their licensing agencies (in the U.S., you should pay all three – ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC). Manion Music customers will never have to pay for using our music again, but, if you want to play other copyrighted material, you have to pay royalties to the owners of that material. Don’t try to “fly under the radar”!

  1. When do I receive Manion Music’s Lifetime Performance License®?

When you order your collection, you will be asked to agree to the Lifetime Performance License at checkout. When we ship your collection, hard copies of your license and your receipt will be included. Be sure to keep both of these in a safe place – they guarantee that you’ll “Never Pay Royalties Again,” as long as you play Manion Music

  1. The “music police” have visited us before. What if they tell me I have to pay them royalties?

ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are all professional colleagues of Manion Music in the licensing business. While their “foot soldiers” who visit you are sometimes new or uninformed, their home offices know us and they respect our licenses – because we respect theirs! After all, we’ve sent many potential customers to the licensing agencies because they just have to play Frank Sinatra or Elvis.

If you are playing Manion Music – and nothing else – as background music, you will never have to pay music royalties again, it’s that simple.

The license will include the name of your business enterprise (not your personal name), and the street address where it will be used. You may begin playing your music immediately. Remember, your Manion Music Lifetime Performance License® is your guarantee that your music is legally “Yours for Life ” Enjoy!
